####

When discussing 1099 tax documentation for [**independent contractors**](https://support.wagwalking.com/en_us/what-is-an-independent-contractor-pcg-SJp0EHIVq), it is important to first clarify some key terms. The amount reported on your 1099 form relates to your **gross payments**, meaning the total amount earned or paid before any deductions, adjustments, or taxes. This is distinct from your **net income**, which is the amount remaining after accounting for business expenses, refunds, fees, or other allowable deductions when filing a tax return. Additionally, note that **taxes**—referring to either state or federal income taxes—are an independent contractor's responsibility and are not dictated by the Wag! Platform.

Tax documentation for independent contractors is commonly provided via two forms. Whether and which form you receive depends on both on how the payments were processed and whether those payments meet certain dollar thresholds:

* **1099-K (more common for Wag! Pet Caregivers):** Issued for payments processed through the third-party settlement organizations (e.g. Stripe).

* **1099-NEC (less common for Wag! Pet Caregivers):** Issued for payments made directly from Wag! to an independent contractor.

💡 _Ensure your contact information in the Wag! Pet Caregiver app matches what's listed in your Stripe Dashboard. This is essential for receiving your eligible tax form(s)!_

## **Am I eligible to receive a 1099?**

####

For pet caregivers who meet the eligibility criteria to receive a 1099 for the 2025 tax year, Wag! will issue Form 1099-K reporting gross payment transactions for services.

In limited circumstances, Form 1099-NEC may be issued for certain other types of payment transactions. Eligibility to receive either form is determined by the applicable federal and state reporting requirements and thresholds for each form.

If the 1099 thresholds are not met, a form will not be issued to you.

_Please note the eligibility criteria to receive a 1099-K form for the 2025 tax year has changed._

####

### For the 2025 Tax Year

####

You may receive a **Form 1099-K** if your gross payments processed through third-party settlement organizations (e.g. Stripe) is over $20,000 and have a minimum of 200 transactions. _Transaction count represents the total number of transactions processed, including payments received and any reversals or refunds._

* _For Example: If you receive a $30 payment for your service, including the tip, in one combined transaction, it would count as one transaction. Alternatively, if you receive a $25 payment for the service followed by a separate $5 tip, it would count as two transactions. In both cases, you receive a total of $30, but the transaction counts differ._

_In rare cases, you may receive a Form 1099‑NEC if your non–service-related payments (such as referral income) exceed $600 for the year. Please note that both 1099-K and 1099-NEC reporting thresholds vary by state._

_Additionally, the requirement to file and pay taxes is separate from the informational reporting of 1099 forms. You may still be required to report and pay taxes on your income, even if you do not receive a 1099._

Previous years’ 1099s will be available in the “Tax Forms” tab of the Stripe dashboard. The IRS generally requires forms to be retained for 3 years. If you don’t see them at that time, please visit [**support.stripe.com/express**](https://support.stripe.com/express) and click “Contact Stripe Express Support” for assistance.

####

### **Why do I have to consent to receive my 1099 digitally via Stripe and where do I do so?**

####

By default, IRS regulations require that tax documents are physically mailed. If you would like to receive your 1099 digitally via Stripe, your consent is required. In order to receive your 1099 tax document digitally, you must consent through the Stripe dashboard in the Wag! Pet Caregiver app by January 19, 2026.

If you are eligible for a 1099-K and/or 1099-NEC and selected electronic delivery (e-delivery), Stripe will send a personalized access link to your email address on file. To access your electronic 2025 tax document, you must complete verification steps, which require the information in your Stripe Express Dashboard to match the details in your Wag! Pet Caregiver app.

####

### **What if I can't verify my information using my 1099 e-delivery link?**

####

If you cannot access your 1099 form via the e-delivery link, it's likely due to a mismatch or missing information between your Stripe Express Dashboard and your Wag! Pet Caregiver app.

**To update your information in Stripe:**

* Go to your Stripe Express Dashboard and update your personal and tax details to ensure they are correct and up-to-date.
* Stripe will review any changes, which may take 1-2 days. You will receive an email if further steps are needed.

For additional questions on updating your information, please visit [**support.stripe.com/express**](http://support.stripe.com/express) and click “Contact Stripe Express Support.”

####

### **Do I have to download my 1099 from Stripe?**

####

No. Receiving your 1099 digitally is optional, though it is the most convenient and immediate option to receive it. If you **do not** consent to receiving your 1099 digitally via Stripe, your 1099 will be mailed to you.

####

### **I consented to electronic delivery of my 1099, but changed my mind — what do I do?**

####

If you opted in to receive your 1099 digitally, but would now like it to be mailed to your physical address, please visit [**support.stripe.com/express**](https://support.stripe.com/express) and click “Contact Stripe Express Support.”

####

## **The number on the 1099-K doesn’t match my earnings. Why?**

####

Your 1099-K form reports your total **gross payments** processed through third-party organizations like Stripe. Gross payments include service and tip payouts, cancellation payouts, Wag’s service fees, and any state and local taxes collected from the Pet Parent. In other words, the 1099-K shows the total amount Pet Parents paid prior to any deductions or adjustments. Amounts that you don’t receive in your payout are generally deductible as business expenses on your tax return, which reduces the income you pay tax on.

At the end of the year, Wag! provides a yearly payment history showing the component parts of your gross payments. You can use this report to identify which amounts are business expenses for tax purposes in the year they are incurred, which reduces your taxable income.

Your Form 1099-K is based on the transaction date (when the Pet Parent is charged), while your payouts are based on the date the cash is transferred to your Wag! Stripe Express account. Whether your income is taxable when it is earned, or when you receive it, depends on whether your business uses the “**cash method**” or “**accrual method**” of accounting.

* Under the **cash method**, income is typically taxable when it is actually or constructively received (generally, when it is available to you in your Wag! Stripe Express account).
* Under the **accrual method**, income is generally taxable when it is earned (for example, when the service is completed and the Pet Parent is charged), even if you haven’t received the payout yet.
